Couscous originates in North Africa and is now very popular in Israel. Couscous is made from steamed semolina, from the most nutritious part of the wheat. Osem offers medium couscous, which is the most popular form here in Israel. The products are made from natural ingredients only and are very nutritious. Availavle in a bag of 10 pounds. Osem has succeeded in convincing the American Jewish consumer to broaden the range of kosher products that they consume to include convenience foods such as ready-made cakes and personal dehydrated ready meals (manot hamot), health foods such as crackers and pasta, and middle eastern foods such as snacks like bissli and bamba. Osem is really benefiting from the increased demands.

The packaging is awkward though--it is not resealable. I don't understand the references to Israel in the product description. This is NOT Israeli (pearl) couscous. The grains are slightly larger than my supermarket brands and quickly re-hydrates without becoming sticky. Just take it in a Bowl...Pour Hot water..and a few drops of oil...and cover and leave it for 5 mins...fluff with a fork...and LO!!! Excellent soft grained yummy couscous. We are primarily Rice eaters at my place other than breads...and my extremely fussy toddler acutually ate it like its rice...just a softer fluffier version than the Long grain that we have been used to. Excellent...great source of fibre...i wasnt sure if I could use it in place of rice...But I just add a pinch of salt it it when cooking..and it works great...Intend to use it for Pulav...Upma...I definitely think its a great healthier and easier alternative. |
